Hillside High School

At the October 30th, 2024 Hillside Board of Education meeting, many Hillside High School students received awards and recognition! This summer, a group of high school students completed the Carpentry 1 Course, gaining hands-on experience in woodworking and construction. Throughout the course, they built various projects, including birdhouses, toolboxes, and bookshelves. Their hard work was officially recognized and stamped by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, ensuring the quality of their training meets industry standards. Moreover, these students have the unique opportunity to apply for college credit through Thomas Edison State University, advancing their education and career prospects. This course was made possible by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Innovative Dual Enrollment Grant, which supports high school students in earning college credits while still in school. Thank you to Mrs. Tettey Lokko, the dedicated teacher who guided the students through this course and for her commitment to their success! Also honored at the Board Meeting, were 4 student heroes! Last week 4 of our students: Jorge Arturo Rojas Valverde, Licelys Melendez, Eva Vital, and Zara Quercini, witnessed an elderly woman crossing the street in medical distress. As the woman passed out the young scholars jumped into action, stopping traffic, calling the police, and making the woman more comfortable. These young people would not leave her side until law enforcement arrived. We salute their efforts and service! Last but certainly not least, Hillside High School student, Harmony Reed, was recognized for her amazing work in the Write on Sports Program with Montclair State University! Earlier today (10/29/2024), the Hillside High School Social Studies department hosted "Hillside Student Voices: 2024 Presidential Election — What Do Students Care About?" This was a discussion forum hosted by Ms. Simon, where students participated in a survey and were asked questions regarding this year's Presidential Election! Students expressed their interest in politics, and discussed specific topics such as healthcare, climate change, and education policy! Students also participated in an activity where they provided questions they would ask the 2024 Presidential candidates if they had the opportunity! The Hillside High School student voices forum was insightful, fun, and engaging! Today, October 28, 2024, students from Hillside High School’s Yearbook and Newspaper Clubs attended the Garden State Scholastic Press Association’s Fall Conference at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ! Students got to select a workshop to attend during each of 5 sessions, ranging in topics from photojournalism to yearbook layout, and many more in between! We look forward to seeing the product our students yield after participating in this training. On October 17th, 2024, the Academic Decathlon team visited the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium in Fort Hancock! The team learned about the importance of marshes, how the dunes help maintain the shores and the history of Sandy Hook. The students went shad fishing, which is a technique the Lenape used, in the river and caught hermit crabs, pike fish, shrimp, snails, and other fish along the river! They were able to explore the ocean side to collect shells and rocks. The field guide explained some of the items the students gathered such as sea glass, razor clam shells, and even a full-sized horseshoe crab! Shout out to Hillside High School scholar, Harmony Reed! Through Hillside Public Schools' 2024 summer programs, Harmony had the privilege of attending the Write on Sports (WoS) program held at Montclair State University @montclairstateu. She excelled throughout the course & exemplified herself as a bright & articulate student with tons of potential. Not only did Harmony's teachers at Write on Sports invite her back next year, but they also chose Harmony to be a presenter at the Write on Sports Annual Awards Banquet held on October 9th, 2024! Harmony was introduced by the well-known sports legend, Peter King. She also had the honor of giving a speech & presenting the 2024 Literacy Champion Award to CBS sports commentator Ian Eagle! Harmony and her family were given the opportunity to dine & converse with these legends & their families as well as network with several others. On Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024, Hillside High School students enrolled in the dual enrollment class with NJIT, Forensics Science (FRSC) 201, participated in a "Forensics Science Day on Campus" event! Students participated in two mock crime scenes and investigated the "crimes" by doing an initial intake, sketching, note-taking, and collecting and preserving evidence. Afterward, students took a scavenger hunt-style tour of the campus and visited the AR/VR lab where they interacted further with virtual crime scenes! Back in the classroom, students worked together to document their work in a crime scene report! On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, Hillside Public Schools celebrated its 2024 Homecoming! The event commenced with the Homecoming Parade, in which our Hillside Public Schools Color Guard, Superintendent Glover, JROTC, Middle School Marching Band, Cheerleaders, and staff, walked from Hillside High School to Woodfield Stadium! After the parade, the Hillside Public Schools community gathered at Woodfield Stadium for a brick-laying ceremony hosted by the Hillside Educational Foundation! "From June 26th-June 30th, 2024 the JETS Club at Hillside High School participated in the National TSA Conference in Orlando, Florida. The conference sessions boosted students' critical thinking skills, by engaging them in a design/build challenge, multiple-choice exam, and presentation. The experience strengthened students' confidence in STEM and enhanced teamwork skills. With a focus on solving complex problems together, participants tackled the exciting theme of "Engineering Another World,” looking at problem-solving techniques, time management, and planning strategies."
