Hillside High School’s Student Council Earns National Award! Hillside, NJ (April 2024). For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that improve the school and community, the Hillside High School Student Council, @hillsidestuco has been recognized as a 2024 National Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (https://www.natstuco.org/) (NASC)! The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (http://nassp.org/) (NASSP). The Hillside High School Student Council raises money for the Cooperman Barnabas Breast Center in Livingston, NJ; produces school-wide events to promote a positive school climate and culture like their annual PowderPuff Football Game, Wing Off, and Cupcake Wars, to name a few. They are also a proud member of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC) where they are regularly recognized for there positive contributions to their immediate community, and the community at large! “Receiving a National Council of Excellence Award reflects the amazing dedication of the students and school to make their community a better place,” said NASSP @nassp CEO Ronn Nozoe. "Hillside High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all.” A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. On March 28th, 2024, Hillside Innovation Academy (H.I.A.) held its National Junior Art Honor Society Induction Ceremony (NJAHS). H.I.A. hosted a beautiful ceremony in its Board Room, which was full of proud parents, students, and families. Congratulations to all of the H.I.A. Inductees who earned their spots in this prestigious Honor Society through creativity, artistry, and hard work! Of course, thank you to Ms. Rachel Therres, dedicated, and passionate art teacher at H.I.A. and NJAHS advisor, who hosted the induction ceremony. Thank you to Principal Silva, Superintendent Glover, and H.I.A. co-founder Mr. Salters, who were all present at the ceremony last night and spoke inspirational words to our students! Hillside Innovation Academy (H.I.A.) was recently featured on TAPinto Hillside @tapintohillside! "The National Junior Art Honor Society is about to add 19 Hillside students to its growing numbers. The Hillside Innovation Academy will be holding its Chapter’s Induction Ceremony on March 28 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature Arts Ed NJ’s Visual Artist and Community Engagement Activator Monifa Kincaid as a guest speaker to highlight student achievements and shed light on the importance of art in schools and communities. Membership in Hillside Innovation Academy's Chapter requires that students maintain a 90% or above in art class, submit a statement of interest, and attend weekly meetings. HIA’s chapter takes part in enhancing the aesthetics of the school with mural paintings, and art displays, and by contributing to the school newsletter and yearbook." On Thursday, March 21st, the ESL Department, led by Supervisor Evelyn Okparaeke, in collaboration with Ola Edwards Vice Principal, Azure Diggs and Math Supervisor, Rita Della Valle, hosted a ESL Parent Resource Night for Grades 2-6 to engage and inform parents of the resources available for their children specific to their English language needs. This event would not be possible without the dedicated teachers of Ola Edwards, Ms. Altenor, Mrs. Huynh, Ms. Rosamalia, and ESL teacher at Hurden Looker, Mrs. DeJesus who volunteered their time to teach parents about the valuable resources available to our multilingual learners both at school and at home. Special shoutout to Custodian Sunny and Security Guard Mel for all their assistance and to Maschio’s for providing food and refreshments. Being multilingual is a superpower and at Hillside Public Schools we celebrate and honor the diversity of all our students!
