Congratulations to Melissa Ullrich from Hillside High School on being selected by the NJ Holocaust Commission as one of thirty New Jersey educators to attend a Holocaust Education trip to Europe! This education trip to Europe included Maud Dahme, one of the Hidden Children from the Netherlands. Melissa Ullrich visited Berlin, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic, multiple cities within Poland, and ended the trip in Amsterdam, Netherlands!

On Thursday, 8/8/2024, @keanuniversity 's Harwood Arena hosted the 2024 Big Central Conference Media Day! Football teams within the Big Central Conference filled the arena while being interviewed by many local media outlets. Each team was represented by its coach and at least 3 football players. 3 of our Hillside High School scholars and teacher Ms. Tenreiro attend @njit 's Forensic Science Initiative Summer JumpStart Program (FSI)! Students explored the properties of glass at GlassRoots Studio in Newark, testified as expert forensic witnesses in Mock Court, and more! Ms. Tenreiro and two colleagues, one from Newark and one from Ridgewood, designed two Microscopy lessons which they taught to their colleagues at the New Jersey Forensic Science Education Conference. These lessons were refined and then taught to our JumpStart students last month!

From June 26th to June 30th, 2024, the JETS (Junior Engineering and Technology Club) at Hillside High School participated in the National TSA (Technology Student Association) Conference in Orlando, Florida. The conference sessions boosted students' critical thinking skills, by engaging them in a design/build challenge, multiple-choice exam, and presentation. The experience strengthened students' confidence in STEM and enhanced teamwork skills! With a focus on solving complex problems together, participants tackled the exciting theme of "Engineering Another World,” looking at problem-solving techniques, time management techniques, and planning strategies. Great work, JETS students and Ms. Ebong!

Students, Heloysa Da Silva, Yosmeiri Rodriguez, and Camila Duchi Padilla use paintbrushes to gently transfer nearly 70 Monarch caterpillars over to Swamp Milkweed within the Hillside High School Garden grounds! The gardens were inaugurated with an event day that invited the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes to mimic the four stages of the Monarch Butterfly, from the larvae stage to the Butterfly stage!

Lady Liberty and Learning! On June 3, 2024, Mr. Skelton and Ms. Andino had a fantastic day exploring history and nature with students from Hillside High School at Liberty State Park! The views of New York City were incredible, and learning about the park's role in immigration was truly eye-opening for everyone! Both students and staff were grateful for this educational adventure!

Pre-K and Kindergarten students visited Hillside High School's Garden Club to tour the new Monarch Butterfly Gardens and participate in activities that mimic the life stages of the Monarch Butterfly! Students joined in storytime, yoga, nature hide-and-seek, squirming through wiggle tunnels and having an upside-down hangout session like a caterpillar, being wrapped up in and breaking out of a paper chrysalis, painting, planting seeds, getting face paint and making seed bombs. The high schoolers had a wonderful time hosting and leading the sessions! All the kids were equally excited to meet each other, teach, and learn about Monarch Butterflies and how to save them. Children received butterfly bookmarks and stickers and their classes were gifted with an English and Spanish copy of "Monarch, Come Play with Me!" A NJ Sustainable School Grant @sustainable_jersey funded this event! Thank you to all the teachers who made this event possible including our Garden Club advisors Mrs. Ambrose and Mrs. Comerchero!

Hillside High School Student Council (StuCo) attended the @NJASC Spring Awards Ceremony at Six Flags in Jackson, NJ! @hillsidestuco was awarded the Community Smile Award, in recognition of their work to improve the school community and beyond, and the State Charity Award, in recognition of their donation in the amount of $1,000 to the NJASC 2023 State Charity @HugsForBrady.
