We are thrilled to share the exciting news about the recent achievement of our Girls Rock Science Club at Deanna G. Taylor Academy (DGTA). Today, our girls showcased their innovation, teamwork, and engineering skills as they embarked on a thrilling project using the Engineering Design Process to create zipline racers! The girls dived into the creative process enthusiastically, starting by sketching their designs and collaborating effectively as a team. It was truly inspiring to witness their dedication and determination throughout the project. Their hard work paid off, and the girls achieved success with their zipline racer prototypes. This achievement highlights the girls' ability to apply engineering principles and underscores the importance of teamwork and collaboration in solving challenges. Congratulations to the Hillside High School Academic Decathlon team for making it to the State Competition! The team won 8 medals and came in fourth in the Regional Competition! The State Competition is on March 2, 2024! On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, The Hillside High School J.E.T.S. (Junior Engineering & Technology Society) students participated in the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey's High School Challenge! Our engineering students were tasked with designing/building a Catwalk robot for the Lincoln and Holland Tunnel! Hillside Public Schools is incredibly proud of our students, and a special thanks goes out to Ms. Ebong for leading the J.E.T.S. throughout the competition. On the morning of January 31, 2024, W.O.K. Middle School 8th graders were treated to a High School introductory assembly! Hillside High School Counselor Dr. McCoy led the presentation, speaking to the W.O.K. 8th graders about what to expect in High School, including the importance of grades, and various activities to be involved in! Hillside High School students from various organizations also spoke to our middle schoolers to speak on behalf of what to expect in the next chapter of their lives. On Saturday, January 27, 2024, the Hillside High School Academic Decathlon team participated in the Regional Competition against multiple schools from central New Jersey. The team has been studying the concept of technology as seen in different fields, such as Literature, Science, and Economics. The event consists of seven multiple-choice tests, a speech, an essay, and an interview. To prepare, the team bonded on Thursday and Friday by taking practice tests, practicing interview and speech skills, and learning from one another. A special thank you to Mr. Emenaka for tutoring the team in Geometry and Differential Calculus. We also would like to thank our teachers Ms. Agoglia, Mrs. Tenreiro, Ms. Ullrich, and Mrs. Young for volunteering their time on Saturday to help judge the competition! The funding promotes buying local produce and meats from small farms throughout New Jersey. On January 25th, 2024, Hillside High School Juniors and Seniors took a trip to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York! The Barclays was home to a Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Panel and Fair, including panelists from iHeartMedia, and the NBA! On January 13, 2023, during the Hillside Public School District's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of celebration, A Day of Service Drive was occurring in the Hillside High School cafeteria! Students from Hillside Innovation Academy, W.O.K. Middle School, and Hillside High School assembled to sort items and build care packages. The entire Hillside community supported this initiative. All schools in our district, the Hillside Education Association, and the AT&T pioneers generously donated socks, scarves, hats, gloves, combs, and brushes to create care packages for the homeless! On January 24, 2024, Hillside High School students will partner with Berniece's Place to hand out care packages at the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless Annual Service Fair. This event was organized by Superintendent Glover, Ms. Harris, Ms. Powell, Vice-Principals Rosalind Bartholomew and Obinna Emenaka, and the A.P.
