Over the past two days, Hillside Public Schools teachers delved into the SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) model while exploring how @apple technology can be used to strengthen curriculum and pedagogy. They discovered effective ways to ignite creativity, foster innovation, and design lessons that not only redefine learning but also ensure accessibility and engagement for all students! Thank you to Dr. Kumar, Supervisor of Instructional Technology, and Vice-Principals Guilford and Budha for facilitating such an engaging professional development experience grounded in the principles of universally designed learning!

Hillside Public Schools teachers engaged in powerful learning with Prisms, exploring the new platform dashboard and uncovering the origins of Prisms as a tool for immersive STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning! Teachers also had the opportunity to dive into a lesson of their choice for this school year, sparking rich discussions on how Prisms can deepen understanding and bring complex concepts to life. Hillside Public Schools' K–3 Climate Literacy Pilot Teachers are kicking off an exciting year as part of the New Jersey Department of Education (@newjerseydoe) Climate Literacy Grant! Mr. Stuart Newman, Bureau Chief of the Bureau of Recycling & Planning from the County of Union Department of Engineering, Public Works & Facilities Management, shared an engaging overview of sustainability and climate change topics that are especially relevant to Union County! Our teachers then collaborated to design student-led resilience projects that will empower students to take action throughout the year. On August 28th, 2025, the League of Women Voters of Hillside held a mock election during Hillside Public Schools District's Back to School event at Ola Edwards Community School! There were three items and a write-in line on the ballot. Student voters received “I VOTED” stickers, pencil sets, and sheet stickers. Adult voters received “I VOTED” stickers and Pocket U.S. Constitutions. See the first image for the mock election results!

Our newest teachers and staff had the opportunity to meet the dedicated directors, principals, vice-principals, and supervisors who lead Hillside Public Schools, learning more about the incredible team supporting them every step of the way. To mark the occasion, each new teacher and staff member received their official Hillside lanyard and pin—a symbol of belonging to the family and the important journey ahead. Shoutout to the Hillside High School Garden Club (@hillsidehsgardenclub) students and advisors, so far 19 eggplants have grown, 8 butternut squash, at least 5 green peppers, decorative orange gourds, and a handful of green-bean pods have grown! Even more fruits and vegetables are expected to grow as we approach the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
