Today, (11/22/2024), the @scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead) Mentorship Program commenced at Hillside Public Schools! Community leaders, and volunteers visited Ola Edwards Community School, Hurden Looker, Deanna Taylor Academy, and A.P. Morris Early Childhood Center to read to students! This program is designed to deepen literacy and instill a love of reading in our students through mentors, who will share an hour of their time once a month! Shoutout to Superintendent Glover, Mayor Vertreese, Mrs. Dale-Rawls, Ms. Simon, Mrs. Muldrow, our Hillside High School student readers, and all of those from our school district community who read to students! In Mrs. Corrothers' first-grade class at A.P. Morris Early Childhood Center, students used sky observation charts as data about daytime and nighttime hours on two different days! Students used snap cubes to represent and compare the lengths of daytime and nighttime hours. Scholars then used a bar graph they analyzed to determine what causes daytime to be longer or shorter!

Morris building in honor of Ms. Ruby Bridges, the first black student to integrate an elementary school in the United States in 1960! In the OpenSciEd pilot unit on Forces & Motion, Ms. Modena's students at A.P. Morris have been busy planning, building, and soon testing their own mini golf courses! Through this hands-on project, scholars are learning how to make things move by pushing and pulling. They are also figuring out ways to make their golf courses fun yet challenging!
